TOP 10 Sites to See in Havana, Cuba
Two weeks ago I ventured to Cuba. Ever since they opened the boarders to americans we have been interested in going. We were looking for a quick fun trip that we could go on for our anniversary. Only 8 days out we booked flights to Cuba direct out of Miami Florida. It was a whirl wind trying to gather everything we needed to travel to Cuba, let alone plan out what to do while we were there and find a place to stay! More on all of this to come in my next post AND in my Instagram Live video Wednesday 12/28 at 7pm. But for now I figured I would share with you the TOP 1o Sites to see in Havana, Cuba.
Havana is a large city, full of great things to do, but I had a really difficult time finding what the cool things were do on the internet when planning my trip. I hope this guide helps you when planning your trip to Cuba. These are my ten MUST do’s.
1. EXPLORE OLD HAVANA
Old Havana, was probably our favorite place. It was lively, and easy to get around. You could spend few days just exploring Old Havana. My recommendation would be to stay in this location. We found ourselves always going back here and it was a little far from our hotel.
2. FLORIDITA BAR
Floridita Bar is a famous bar that back in the day Ernest Hemingway would go to and grab a frozen daiquiri. Very chic of him. It is a classic tourist spot, but if you are going to drink a frozen drink anywhere this is the place. To be honest you can get a WAY better daiquiri basically anywhere in America, but hey they are cheap fun and there is usually live music. When we were there, a Beatles tribute band was playing.
3. HOTEL AMBOS MUNDOS
This hotel is another extension of Hemingway’s Cuba Ventures. This is the hotel he stayed at. You can do a full Hemingway tour here, and even see the room he use to stay in. BUT what I think is even better is this super OLD elevator that is still in operation. Super cool to see, and takes you right the roof. On the roof you can see three sixty views of old Havana, the food is a little pricey for Havana prices. But might be worth it (more on that later). The decor inside is total Tommy Bahama with banana print walls, deep mahogany bars & sitting areas with marble floors.
4. THE FACTORY
This way by far the BEST place we went in Havana In fact is was the ONLY place we went out at. There wasn’t a ton of bars or nightlife that you could go to around our hotel, and the factory was a quick five minute cab ride. Picture an abandoned warehouse. One with white walls, three floors, and separated into a million different rooms. Have you ever been to Art Basel? It was basically an Art Basel display with each room having a different theme, different bar, and different music. Some rooms were dark like a club, others galleries, and even a movie theater playing the Beatles. PLUS IT WAS LITERALLY SO CHEAP. Only 2 CUC to get in and then all the drinks were only 1CUC each. DEAL.
5. HOTEL NATIONAL
Our go to spot for dinner and drinks. It basically looks like the breakers in palm beach. Grab a drink out on the outdoor patio, it overlooks the Malecon. it gets packed for sunset, so try to get there early. If you go early enough in the day you can check out the underground tunnels that the Russians used during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
6. RIDE IN A TAXI PARTICULAR
This was one Anj thought was a bit of a rip, but I was into it. Basically you can pay these guys 40CUC for an hour and they will take you all around the city. We had already ton the red hop on/hop off bus so we didn’t want another full tour. We bargained with our guy and got a taxi to just drive us up and down the Malecon for about 15CUC.
7. TAKE THE RED BUS
Surprisingly we have NEVER taken one of the hop on hop off buses before. Not even in Europe and we have been there a ton. But when we arrived in Cuba we were so unfamiliar with the area, and we realized everything was pretty far part. This bus cost 10CUC for the day and it was worth it. We only got off at a couple of stops but it made for an easy way to get around the city, feel some breeze in your hair and just kinda chill.
8. 360 DEGREE VIEWS
We were recommended to go here by our Airbnb host. Apparently it is really pretty for sunset, but when we got there an hour before sunset, they were full and there was a line. So we headed back at night. We went up saw the views and grabbed a drink.
9.SUNSET AT THE MALECON
We didn’t do this till our last night in Cuba, but it was really special. I recommend for your first night! We get great sunsets here in florida, but everyone gathers along the walls and watches the sun cascade down. Everyone said to go out on the Malecon, but not sure if I would recommend. Kinda sketchy. We walked the whole thing back to our hotel and not sure if I wold have went out and partied at any of those places.
10. DRINK LOTS OF CRYSTAL
Not to be confused with Crystal Champagne. This is Beer. A Cuban beer. Out of all the ones we tried this was by far the best. We ended up just kinda bar hopping around havana and grabbing a crystal at every stop. One place had these giant beer towers and we decided why not?! It was only 8CUC! That is insane…
