The Beautiful Santorini
One hundred and eighty six miles off the coast of Athens, Greece, you find deep shades of indigo and navy waters, cliff-side houses and the gorgeous sunsets of the beautiful Santorini, Greece’s largest island. Traveling to Santorini has been on my bucket list ever since pinterest was created… but really. I thought it was one of those destinations that I would never actually make it to. it seemed so far out of reach for this Florida girl to travel too. When Andrew’s parents told us they were headed to Greece we jumped at the opportunity to tag along. We immediately booked our flights and had dreams about how beautiful Santorini was going to be for weeks to come.
Athens was fun and all (you can read about that here) BUT Santorini, was just amazing. We rented this amazing Villa through air bnb and it as absolutely stunning. Even better than what the pictures had to offer. Our host Panos was incredibly sweet, provided us with breakfast items and a map. He sat down with us for about 15 minutes and we told him everything we wanted to see and do. He then provided recommendations for the best places to accomplish these tasks at. His recommendations were great, he steered us away from the tourist trap areas and provided more local places for us to visit.
One of the big to do’s for me was riding the donkeys. I know they are completely over worked and live a terrible life, but it just looked like so much fun and the donkeys were decorated so cutely. Panos warned us that this experience is a little scary. The donkeys are walking up and down these curvy streets on the side of a cliff. He suggested if we do decide to ride the donkeys to ride them up the cliff rather than down. USE THIS recommendation if ever in Santorini. I have to say this was a major highlight of my trip. Andrew’s mom and I had so much fun riding these we did it twice! Once in Fira down to the cruise port, and once in Oia to go up from Amoundi Bay.
Our five days in Santorini were spent doing lots of local shopping, drinking obscene amounts of Santorini’s famous sweet white wine, and watching sunsets from our hot tubs at our villa. It was a ton of walking, many many steps to get up and down to our villa and across town. But it was beautiful, serene and calming. We ended our trip with a five our catamaran ride on the water. This is a MUST do! On the five hour boat tour we an endless wine, a complementary dinner, trips to the hot springs, red beach &white beach, and were able to enjoy the sunset from the water. STUNNING!
If I ever head back. I will check out some of the other Greek islands, because I hear they are just as beautiful. Santorini though I give it a 10/10!
